The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

A silent horror film directed by Robert Wiene from a screenplay by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer. It is one of the most influential of German Expressionist films and is often considered one of the greatest horror movies of the silent era – notable for having introduced the ‘twist ending’ in cinema and for its weird and distorted set design. Our hero Francis grapples with the deranged Dr.Caligari in a world which is not quite all that it seems.

CHINATOWN (1974)

A true noir film that always comes in a top 10 films of all time lists has every right to be in it. From direction to cinematography, everything here is done to perfection.

One of my favorite Roman Polanski film of the time, Chinatown tells the story of a struggling P.I. Solving case with thousands of turns and twists with hazy characters and mystical music with a very much ambiguous ending that will leave you in a daze. A true crime noir indeed.

Sunset Boulevard (1950)

A very cynical on view on Hollywood, not just the actors but directors, screenwriters, and even studios, Sunset Boulevard is a triumph of a film directed by one of the best directors of all time – Billy Wilder. 

The story of faded screen legend actress living in an age-old mansion with her butler and a new screenwriter who has no choice but to write a new script for her comeback shows some of the very dark truths of about Hollywood especially of 50’s. Shot in beautiful black and white, this film is filled with beautiful acting and some of the most memorable dialogues.

The Big Sleep(1946)

Private detective  Philip Marlowe is hired by a rich family. Before the complex case is over, he’s seen murder, blackmail and what might be love, classic noir indeed.

Time called the film “wakeful fare for folks who don’t care what is going on, or why, so long as the talk is hard and the action harder” but insists that “the plot’s crazily mystifying, nightmare blur is an asset, and only one of many”; it calls Bogart “by far the strongest” of its assets and says Hawks, “even on the chaste screen…manages to get a good deal of the glamorous tawdriness of big-city low life, discreetly laced with hints of dope addiction, voyeurism, and fornication.”

The Big Sleep is known for its convoluted plot. During filming, allegedly neither the director nor the screenwriters knew whether chauffeur Owen Taylor was murdered or had killed himself. They sent a cable to Chandler, who told a friend in a later letter: “They sent me a wire … asking me, and dammit I didn’t know either”.

Please Like Me – an amazing Australian dramedy sitcom you probably never heard of!

‘Please Like Me’ seems a bit needy, as titles go. But it’s not hard to like this Australian series, which is a dramedy with bit of romance attached to it. The lead is Josh (played by Josh Thomas), who gets dumped by his girlfriend in the first few minutes of the first episode. Things haven’t been working out, she says. ‘Also – you’re gay.’ Josh slowly comes to terms with this and he doesn’t really feel like coming out because the concept is ‘so 90’s’.

That’s our series leads Josh with his best mate and roommate Tom!

Other cast includes Josh’s anxious, ineffectual and caring dad with his new wife, Josh’s ex-girlfriend Claire and his roommate best friend Tom. (who is very bad at making any kind of decisions let alone expressing himself clearly with his emotions).

The other character who plays a central role, especially during the second season onward, is Josh’s mum (Debra Lawrance), who is suffering from depression. Josh and his mum relation cum adventures are shown more often in later seasons with sometimes being funny and sometimes immensely heartbreaking.

 

Please Like Me is a very thoughtful dark comedy. The writing is amazing. From a first glance, this show might appear to be about gay life in Australia, but it’s just a really funny show about life, generally, with the main character and many side characters who happen to be gay. It can be dark and depressing at times, and sometimes silly, but always very insightful without trying too hard, being pretentious.

Over four seasons, ( that’s just 24 episodes with runtime 30 minutes) the series deals with all kinds of topics such as homophobia and racism, depression and workplace harassment, breast cancer and STDs.

All in all, Josh is an interesting character. He is sweet, honest and mostly tries to stay the same avoiding any conflicts that come his way.

These characters are all real. Relatable in each of our lives and surroundings. very well-portrayed and dealing with relatable crises.
